PERFECT TENSES In both Spanish and English the perfect tenses are compound tenses which combine the helping verb haber, or “to have,” with a past participle in order to express an action which happened earlier in relation to a given moment in time or to another action: Ya he estado en Venezuela. I have been in Venezuela. Ya había salido cuando llamaste.

Although ustedes is the plural form of usted, no formality is necessarily implied. Vosotros/as is only used in Spain. In Spanish a verb’s conjugation generally corresponds to a specific subject, therefore subject pronouns can be, and often are, omitted. �Qué haces? What are you doing? Estoy trabajando. I’m working. Note that Spanish does not have an equivalent of the subject pronoun “it”: Está lloviendo. It is raining. ¿Quién era? Who was it? Object Pronouns In order to use object pronouns accurately and avoid confusion it is important to remember that most nouns in Spanish are gendered: silla (chair) and mesa (table) are feminine while escritorio (desk) and sombrer o (hat) are masculine.
